Ok you have made it this far.
You obviously must be bored and
have nothing better to do with your life.

07/03/2003 Archived Entry: "Linux vs. FreeBSD stereo types"

I am on the mailing list for the Palm Beach County Linux Users Group. A very nice group of people. The mailing list had a couple of people asking questions about FreeBSD. I was more than happy to answer some of their questions. It also ended up taking a humorous turn. The differences between Linux users and FreeBSD users. I will post my reply here.

Both Linux and FreeBSD have their zealots. Linux users tend to think FreeBSD user are snobs. FreeBSD users think Linux users are script kiddies. The bigger squabbles between the two camps is more over the licenses they have then the actual software. FreeBSD users see the GPL as a virus. Linux sees the BSD license as a right to steal and horde.
So in the interest of the fun let's stereotype:
Linux is used by kids who still live at home with mom and dad.
FreeBSD is used by Dinosaurs who don't want kids.
Linux users drive fast sports cars
FreeBSD users drive VW bugs. We don't have to compensate for any shortcomings.
Linux users respond to questions with RTFM
FreeBSD users respond with " Why Yes I wrote the manual."
Linux users thinks M$ sux.
FreeBSD users think Microsoft should stop borrowing their code.
Linux users love the community idea and openness of Linux
FreeBSD has a community to it is gated and guarded and you can only contribute and join if you can successfully debate why Einstien's Theory of Relativity is wrong. Of course anyone can use FreeBSD, just don't tell us in the community we are wrong that never happens.
Linux users have a god his name is Linus Torvalds
FreeBSD users have a daemon his name is Beastie ( or Chuck, depending on who you talk to).
Linux users do kernel upgrades and go through userland
FreeBSD users go and make world.
Linux has Mandrake,Suse, Slackware, Redhat, Peanut, and many other flavors. To meet a diversity of tastes.
FreeBSD has Current,Stable, and Release. It is all vanilla. You don't like it to bad.
Linux for Dummies is available at bookstores everywhere.
FreeBSD doesn't want dummies touching their stuff.
Linux users feel SCO will lose the court battle.
FreeBSD users: We kicked AT&T's butt.

Thanks! I enjoyed the laugh.

I graduated from Linux to FreeBSD about 6 months ago and going strong.
